Empowering Change
Intervention Geography
Parivartan’s work area centers around the Bastar region. This region was historically one of India’s largest districts until its reorganization in July 1998, splitting into Bastar, Kanker, and Dantewada districts. Despite administrative changes, the division remains home to various indigenous tribes collectively known as Adivasis. These include the Madia, Muria, Gond, Bhatra, Dhakad, Ghasia, Dhurva, and Halba, affectionately referred to as “Mama.” Living close to nature, these tribes exemplify a simple and contented lifestyle, heavily reliant on forest resources for their sustenance and income. Parivartan’s focus lies in understanding and supporting these communities, who depend on the forest for fuel, fodder, timber, food, and medicinal herbs.
Furthermore, the three original districts have since been further divided into seven districts: Kanker, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Bastar, Dantewada, Sukma, and Bijapur. This expansion underscores the diversity and complexity of the region, highlighting the need for nuanced approaches to address the challenges faced by its inhabitants.
Issues in focus
Education
Parivartan understands that educational obstacles are deeply intertwined with larger socio-economic issues. Through an extensive study, we discovered that farmer loans significantly contribute to high school dropout rates. Many families burdened by debt, especially from tractor loans, face dire consequences such as farmer suicides and child labor. Additionally, crop failures during droughts exacerbate financial strain, with little government assistance available, further hindering children’s education. We’ve shared these findings with district authorities to prompt ongoing action. A key focus of Parivartan’s efforts is our sustained engagement with the Pardhi community, among the most marginalized tribes facing extinction. Despite their nomadic lifestyle, we’ve successfully settled them in specific areas and advocated for schools within Pardhi settlements. Our approach extends beyond formal education, encompassing comprehensive social upliftment. Through our field staff, we empower the Pardhis with knowledge of their rights and facilitate their access to government programs. Additionally, we’re leading initiatives to electrify schools in Pardhi villages, aiming to enhance overall living conditions and educational opportunities for the community.
Forest Rights
Parivartan is deeply involved in supporting communities in navigating the complexities of the Forest Rights Act (FRA). We assist individuals and communities in accessing their rightful titles to both individual and communal forest lands. Our approach emphasizes community-driven forest conservation and propagation through extensive awareness campaigns, training programs, and collective action initiatives. By empowering communities with knowledge of their rights and facilitating the necessary processes, we foster a sense of ownership and stewardship over their forest resources. Through collaborative efforts, we aim to ensure that indigenous communities can assert their rights and sustainably manage their forests for the benefit of present and future generations.
Livelihood
At Parivartan, our livelihood development program is centred on fostering sustainable economic opportunities for tribal communities. Through a holistic approach, we offer comprehensive training, access to resources, and ongoing support to empower community members in honing their skills and establishing small-scale enterprises. By equipping individuals with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive, we aim to catalyse economic empowerment and foster self-sufficiency within these marginalized communities. Moreover, as part of our initiative, we provide capacity-building assistance to communities regarding the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), ensuring they can effectively utilize this government scheme to further enhance their livelihood prospects. Through these efforts, we strive to uplift communities, reduce poverty, and create a sustainable foundation for long-term prosperity.
Entitlement Access
Parivartan is committed to helping marginalized communities access essential state-sponsored entitlements like housing, pension, and medical benefits. Our approach combines awareness, education, training, and ongoing support to empower communities in navigating bureaucratic processes and securing their entitlements. Through targeted awareness campaigns and educational workshops, we inform community members about their rights and the application procedures. Our training programs build their capacity and equip them with the skills needed to complete paperwork and meet eligibility criteria. Furthermore, Parivartan provides hands-on support throughout the process, offering guidance and advocacy to ensure successful access to benefits. By facilitating access to these entitlements, we aim to improve the quality of life for marginalized communities and promote social justice and inclusion.
